Meals On (and Off) Wheels

It’s Tuesday, that means it is Meals On Wheels day.  Meals On Wheels is a non-profit organization that provides meal delivery to homebound individuals.  They need volunteers willing to donate their time and car.  The car part is not mandatory to volunteer, as you deliver with a partner, so you can be the co-pilot.  I choose to donate my time and petrol to this organization because I rarely drive my car and what better reason to get behind the wheel than to deliver food to those that have no other easy means of obtaining it?

pafAnother great organization I have been volunteering for is Project Angel Food.  This non-profit’s mission is to prepare and deliver food that will “nourish the body and spirit of men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.”  There is a myriad of activities for volunteers.  I choose to help out in the kitchen where I portioned out food for the hot meals and then moved on to chopping and shredding purple cabbage.  I feel like there may be a future for me as a souschef.  Project Angel Food is located in Hollywood off the Metro Rapid 704 bus stop at Vine and Santa Monica and it is only a .2 mile walk  There is also a Red Line subway stop at Hollywood and Vine, which is exactly a 1 mile walk to Project Angel Food.

Continuing with the food theme, I have been volunteering at the Union Rescue Mission to help serve free meals to those staying at the Mission.  The Mission is located in Downtown Los Angeles off the Metro Rapid 720 bus stop at S San Pedro and E 6th St and it is only a 450 foot walk.  There is also a Red and Purple Line subway stop at Pershing Square, which is a .7 mile walk to Union Rescue Mission.  If you do drive, there is parking available.

laworksI have found these activities through a great website called LA Works, which is a Los Angeles based organization.  You can search for volunteer opportunities based on your location and skillset.  Whether you are interested in planting a garden, painting a school, reading to the blind, helping the elderly, feeding the hungry, it is all there waiting for you to sign up.

Want to help end hunger with the click of the mouse?  Go to The Hunger Site and click everyday to donate food to the hungry.

I’ll leave you with a very helpful tip, volunteer on a pleasantly full stomach.
